Pricing for Professional Organizers: Charge What You're Worth with Confidence

Pricing for Professional Organizers

If you’ve ever stared at your rate sheet wondering,

“Am I charging too much? Not enough? Will anyone even pay this?”
— you’re not alone.

Pricing is one of the most confusing (and emotionally charged) parts of running a professional organizing business. But it doesn’t have to be.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the I Speak Organized Pricing Formula—a simple yet powerful system to help you calculate your rates, raise your confidence, and stop undercharging for your time.

In This Post You'll Learn:

  • Why "checking out the competition" is NOT a pricing strategy

  • The simple formula to calculate a sustainable hourly rate

  • When to charge hourly vs. when to use project-based pricing

  • How to protect your time, energy, and profit

Let’s simplify the chaos and finally get confident about your pricing.

Why Professional Organizers Struggle with Pricing (And How to Fix It)

Let’s be real: most new organizers don’t learn how to price their services in business school.

What happens instead?
You scroll Facebook groups, ask “what’s everyone else charging?” and pull a number out of thin air.

🙅‍♀️ Big mistake.
Copying local competitors without knowing their business model, profit goals, or overhead is not a strategy—it’s a shortcut to burnout.

🚨 Reality check:

Your pricing should be based on:

  • Your actual business expenses

  • Your desired monthly income

  • Your billable hours

  • AND your long-term goals

How to Set Your Hourly Rate as a New Professional Organizer

Even if you’re just starting out, you need a sustainable hourly rate that reflects your value, covers your costs, and avoids resentment.

Here’s the quick version of my Pricing Formula (you can get access to my full pricing strategy inside my membership program here):

📊 Step 1: Define your income goal

Example: You want to earn $5,000/month.

⏱ Step 2: Estimate your billable hours

Let’s say you work 80 client-facing hours per month.

Base rate = $5,000 ÷ 80 = $62.50/hour

🧾 Step 3: Add your business expenses

Let’s say your monthly overhead (insurance, systems, admin, website, etc.) is $1,000/month.
$1,000 ÷ 80 = $12.50/hour

🧮 Final hourly rate:

$62.50 + $12.50 = $75/hour

That’s your bare minimum to run a real business—not just get paid for your time.

Project Pricing vs. Hourly Pricing: Which Is Better?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but here’s what I teach inside my Organizer Membership Program:

💰 Hourly Pricing Pros:

  • Transparent and simple

  • Easier when starting out

  • Great for long-term or open-ended clients

⚠️ Hourly Pricing Cons:

  • Leads to scope creep

  • Undervalues your behind-the-scenes work

  • Doesn’t scale well with a team

📦 Project-Based Pricing Pros:

  • Focuses on transformation, not time

  • Clear deliverables = easier to sell

  • Scalable and more profitable long-term

If you're unsure how to price projects, start by using your new hourly rate to bundle sessions into packages (e.g., 3-hour minimums, 10-hour packages, etc.).

Common Pricing Mistakes Professional Organizers Make

Here are a few traps I see new organizers fall into (and how to avoid them):

❌ Charging based on confidence instead of math

Fix it: Use the formula above. Take emotion out of your pricing.

❌ Trying to be “the affordable option”

Fix it: Clients pay for results. Be the valuable option.

❌ Not charging for admin time, sourcing, or communication

Fix it: Build those costs into your rates or project proposals.

Why Clients Pay for the Transformation (Not the Time)

Here’s the truth:
You’re not getting paid for the hour. You’re getting paid for the result.

Professional organizers help clients:

  • Reclaim their time

  • Reduce daily stress

  • Improve mental clarity

  • Enjoy their homes again

That’s worth far more than $30/hour. That’s worth investing in—and you need to own that value when quoting your rates.

What Happens When You Know Your Numbers

When you understand exactly why you charge what you charge:

  • You stop feeling anxious about quoting your rates

  • You sound confident and professional on consult calls

  • You attract clients who value your time

  • You stop underpricing just to “get the job”

  • You scale faster and more sustainably

Inside the Organizer Membership Program, I teach this formula in depth—including how to:

  • Calculate your true hourly rate (with taxes, profit margin, and admin time built in)

  • Create project pricing with flexible add-ons

  • Build custom proposals in 20 minutes or less

  • Close high-ticket packages with confidence
